Dr. Moody Alam

AI Scientist & Educationist

I am an AI scientist with research interests in applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the design and development of intelligent systems. I am also deeply engaged in AI education, with a particular focus on advancing the teaching of computer science and integrating AI-assisted technologies into learning and curriculum development.

I am currently a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the University of Bath and serve as the Distance Learning Course Development Lead for the online MSc programmes in the Department of Computer Science. Prior to this, I was the Director of Studies for Undergraduate Programmes (2023–25). I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Short Bio

I obtained my PhD in Computer Science (Distributed Artificial Intelligence) from the University of Southampton in 2013, supervised by Professor Alex Rogers and Professor Sarvapali Ramchurn. Following my doctoral studies, I spent a year at Microsoft Research Cambridge, where I investigated AI-driven approaches for smart energy systems. I subsequently returned to the University of Southampton as a Senior Researcher for two years, before moving to the Machine Learning Research Group at the University of Oxford, where I worked as a Principal Researcher. After my time at Oxford, I held several industry positions as Head of AI and related leadership roles. Further details about my professional experience can be found on my LinkedIn profile.

My academic background spans the breadth of computer science, with a BSc in Computer Science (2005), an MSc in Software Engineering (2007), and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (2013). Prior to undertaking my PhD, I worked as a research programmer in the Intelligent Agents research group at the University of Southampton, developing intelligent software systems and contributing to early applied AI research.
